'Designing Resilience' at Lethaby Gallery

2018

The exhibition 'Creative Unions' at Lethaby Gallery showcases pieces of the collection Empathy, Connection, Play and presents an improvisational performance. The development research of the collection was developed using art-therapy methods, where blindfolded participants explored emotional and physical sensations through touch, dressing, and movement. These workshops informed garments were designed to act as therapeutic tools, encouraging personal exploration through playful engagement.

The performance showcases the interactive and collaborative nature of this project's research process, which had been hidden from view. Four performers engaged with the Empathy Jacket in pairs - a garment designed with no fixed form or correct way of wearing, to be interacted with and explored through movement and gestures of dressing.

Through movement and interaction, the jacket invites self-exploration and play while fostering a shared dialogue between its wearers. The experience creates space for connection, collaboration, and emotional exploration.

Performers:

Kendra-Chiagoro Noel, Kobe Darko, Lydia Walker, Pierre Babbage,
